Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label. Some activities will be repetitive to create a routine that brings comfort to your child.

Kitchen Science

For this sense discovery, open your spice cabinet/drawer and have your child smell spices you have. You could start a discussion about what scent your child and you like and do not like.

For snack ideas, explore your refrigerator with your child for fruit, vegetables or other snacks to eat. After tasting some, help your child to express what he/she feels. Does it taste sweet, sour, bitter, ….?

Language Arts

Peanut Butter Rhino by Vincent Andriani is a fun book about losing a peanut butter sandwich. After viewing the book, help your child to sequence the story: what happened first, next and at the end.
As an extension, I would suggest creating with your child your own story. You could start with “there was a lion that saw something coming in the distance….” (or “Once upon a time…”) and your child and you could take turn completing the story.

I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont is a book about differences. I would recommend you and your child take turn saying “I like myself because…”

As an extension, you could staple together sheets (no more than 5) of paper and write at the bottom: “I like myself because…” Ask you child to tell you the answer, write it down, and have your child illustrate each page with a drawing. Your child could also design a cover page.

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZanHgPprl-0

“Where is Thumbkin?” Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRNDu3O2VQY

”Jack Be Nimble” Song with rhyming https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEJceUPDhh4

“I Like To Eat Apples And Bananas” to start introducing sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHxv-l80RjQ

Math

Daily counting of tally marks and the counters you put in a container is an excellent practice for your child’s mathematical skills. Once tallied or counted, show your child the appropriate number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day and you can also change the counters. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has less? Which are the same?

As an extension, you can break down the number of counters into smaller amounts in groups (For a group of 5 counters, A group of 3 and a group of 2, and see with your child which one is bigger or smaller; or a group of 1 and a group of 4 counters) and then put the counters/groups back together. Do we still have the same total amount of counters or did it change?

Number Recognition: with a ruler in hand, help your child to measure body parts or objects.

Art

For this art project, you need (1) glue, (2) color paper, and (3) scissors. Cut various shapes out of color paper and let your child decide how he/she can glue shapes on paper. You can ask what your child wants to create or make a suggestion (a man, a boat,…) Here are tangram suggestions https://www.education.com/slideshow/tangrams/tangrams-puzzles-1/

For this art project, you need (1) brushes, (2) paint, (3) a square piece of cardboard. Mix with your child different spices in different color paint. Let your child paint the square. You can ask what your child wants to create or make a suggestion. Indoors, use color tape to make shapes spaced out in the room. You can do more advanced shapes too (pentagons, parallelograms,…) Outdoors, use chalk to draw shapes on the driveway. Play music and ask your child to jump from one drawn shape to another. When you stop the music, ask your child to freeze and to tell you which shape your child is standing on. As an extension, you might ask how many sides the shape has.
