Let’s sing together our song “Rise and Shine – Welcome to School Today” by Dr. Jean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAD2OoFuoY and our greeting song “Hello to all the children of the world”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8
I realize that you might have to survey other members of your family for the question of the day so that your child have enough tally marks to count or have your child put more than one tally mark.
What are leaves’ colors?
BROWN GREEN BLUE YELLOW
For the writing/reading process, have your child trace or copy (advanced skill) daily his/her name on paper/dry eraser board/ mini blackboard (kindergarten handwriting page) starting at the top of each letter (you could draw 🙂) either in all uppercase letters or just first letter in uppercase and the rest in lowercase.
Yesterday, we startEd with Hairy Hat Man from Letterland and listen to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWLI4x17RMQ and you traced the capital H and lowercase h. Let’s listen to his story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SadG-XOBFpU After listening to the story, help your child to retell the story using lots of H words.
A whole week activity:
For the phonetic part, have a big yogurt container with a lid filled with small objects or pictures that start with the letter H (hair, heart, helicopter, horse, hat.) You might want to add a picture of a kitty, so that your child can say that kitty does not start with H! Here is a book of H word pictures https://twistynoodle.com/h-is-for-house-2-minibook/ Also, you can add new objects/pictures starting with the letter H every day and let your child explore the container all through the week.
Science
For youngsters, here is I am a Leaf by Jean Marzollo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH9NKpDvLCg
For more advanced reading about leaves, here is Autumn Leaves by Kevin Robbins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RCHJoTJSTQ
After viewing one of the books, encourage your child to go on a hunt for leaves and try to find many different colored and shaped leaves that you will use in math and art projects. In the classroom, I would have rakes for children to use and make leaves’ piles. Children love to jump in, kick and crush leaves!
On the tune of “Oh, my Darling Clementine”, we can sing: what’s the weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label. Some activities will be repetitive to create a routine that brings comfort to your child.
Language Arts
Lucille Colandro wrote a funny series of books. Here is a silly repetitive book: There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwzjH_iJrTo After viewing the book, help your child to remember the different things the old lady swallowed. She stuffed the shirt with leaves. Brainstorm with your child what you can do with leaves.
”Leaves, leaves, everywhere” Song and Movement (your child needs a leaf)
Leaves, leaves, everywhere! (Leaf falls on the ground)
On my hands, my feet, my hair! (Leaf on hands, feet and hair)
On my shoulders, on my toes! (Leaf on shoulders and toes)
One right here upon my nose! (Leaf on nose)
Leaves, leaves, everywhere! On the ground and in the air! (Toss leaf in the air)
Leaves Song (“Are you sleeping?” Tune)
Leaves are falling, leaves are falling,
From the trees, from the trees.
Red and yellow, orange and brown,
To the ground, to the ground.
“Five Little Leaves” Fingerplay
Five little leaves hanging on a fall tree.
The first one said, “Soon we’ll be free.”
The second one said, “I’m falling to the ground.”
The third one said, “I’ll fly into town.”
The fourth one said, “Let us not wait!”
The fifth one said, “isn’t autumn great!”
Then “whooosh” went the breeze and the five little leaves blew off the fall tree.
Math
With all the leaves your child has collected, help your child to sort them in different ways:
- By colors
- By shapes
- By whole leaves and leaflets
- By sizes
- By edged and smooth leaves
- By narrow or wide leaves
You can also help your child graph leaves https://twistynoodle.com/graph-the-leaves-coloring-page/
The calendar is a daily activity to do with your child that develop number and pattern recognition. Here is the link to print a calendar to update daily with your child. The set has a weather component, if you like. https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/october-calendar-setbr4-pages/october-calendar-set-3
Daily counting of tally marks and show your child a number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has fewer? Which are the same? How many more (count with fingers)?
