Let’s sing together our song “Rise and Shine – Welcome to School Today” by Dr. Jean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAD2OoFuoY and our greeting song “Hello to all the children of the world”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8

My favorite Closing Song sung on “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” tune with movement:

Twinkle, twinkle little stars! Time is over and we say goodbye. (Open and close hands)
We had fun with all our friends. Let’s come back and do it again! (Arm moved up and back)
Twinkle, twinkle, little stars! What a wonderful bunch you are! (Blow kisses)

I realize that you might have to survey other members of your family for the question of the day so that your child have enough tally marks to count or have your child put more than one tally mark.

Which Letterland story do you prefer so far?
Lucy Lamp Light/ Firefighter Fred/ Eddy Elephant/Hairy Hat Man/Talking Tess

For the writing/reading process, have your child trace or copy (advanced skill) daily his/her name on paper/dry eraser board/ mini blackboard (kindergarten handwriting page) starting at the top of each letter (you could draw 🙂) either in all uppercase letters or just first letter in uppercase and the rest in lowercase.

If you have My First School Book from Handwriting Without Tears methodology https://www.lwtears.com/hwt. Have your child complete page 30. More letter T practice at http://www.first-school.ws/t.asp?t=http://www.first-school.ws/images/alpha/ap4_zb_tracers/t4.gif and (advanced) http://www.first-school.ws/t.asp?t=http://www.first-school.ws/images/word-search/alphabet/t.gif

A whole week activity:
For the phonetic part, have a big yogurt container with a lid filled with small objects or pictures that start with the letter T (table, teddy, telephone, ten, top, tractor.) You might want to add a picture of a hippo, so that your child can say that hippo does not start with T! Here is a book of T word pictures: https://twistynoodle.com/it-begins-with-t-minibook/ Also, you can add new objects/pictures starting with the letter T every day and let your child explore the container all through the week.

Science

Bats are nocturnal mammals and National Geographic Video reveals interesting facts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBCODnTUOrY Bats use echolocation to fly at night. Have you ever heard an echo of the sound of your words when you are in a room with high ceiling, under a bridge, in a cave…?

For this simple Echo Experiment, you need only a big and deep stainless steel pot. Your child can put his/her head in front of the pot holding the 2 handles and say words like “hello.” What does your child hear? Your child will hear the echo of his/her voice, the sounds coming out of her/his month that are bouncing on the stainless steel wall to your child’s ears!

On the tune of “Oh, my Darling Clementine”, we can sing: what’s the weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label. Some activities will be repetitive to create a routine that brings comfort to your child.

Language Arts

Bats are often associated to scary stories, but are in fact cute animals. Here are:

  1. There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat by Lucille Colandro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb0NBbnrPoQ
  2. Bat Jamboree by Kathy Appelt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrLN-aYblmY
  3. Stella Luna by Janell Cannon (advanced) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkupcdViWPQ

After viewing a book, help your child to sequence the story: what happened first, next,…. and at the end. In the first two books, you and your child can count what is swallowed and bats. In Stella Luna, the theme of friendship is introduced. Brainstorm with your child what friendship is and how you know?

”5 Little Bats” Fingerplay

5 little bats flying through the door.
One flew away and then there were four.
Four little bats hiding in a tree.
One flew away and then there were three.
Three little bats looking down at you.
One flew away and then there were two.
Two little bats hiding from the sun.
One flew away and then there were one.
One little bat hanging all alone.
One flew away and then there were none!

“Flutter, Flutter, Little Bat” Song (“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” tune)

Flutter, flutter, little bat.
How I wonder where you’re at?
Swooping through the darkest night.
Find your way without a light!
Flutter, flutter, little bat.
How I wonder where you’re at!

“Bats are Sleeping” Song (“Frère Jacques” tune)

Bats are sleeping. Bats are sleeping,
Upside down, upside down.
Sleeping in the day sun.
Waiting for the night to come.
Then, they’ll fly around. Then, they’ll fly around!

Math

The calendar is a daily activity to do with your child that develop number and pattern recognition. Here is the link to print a calendar to update daily with your child. The set has a weather component, if you like. https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/october-calendar-setbr4-pages/october-calendar-set-3

Daily counting of tally marks and show your child a number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has fewer? Which are the same? How many more (count with fingers)?

Outside time with climbing, jumping, bicycling, running, walking are great ways to develop the whole child.

For Dancing with Scarves, you need scarves and classical music. Encourage your child to wave a scarf on the music. When you stop the music, tell your child to freeze!
