Let’s sing together our song “Rise and Shine – Welcome to School Today” by Dr. Jean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAD2OoFuoY and our greeting song “Hello to all the children of the world”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8

My favorite Closing Song sung on “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” tune with movement:   Twinkle, twinkle little stars! Time is over and we say goodbye. (Open and close hands)
We had fun with all our friends. Let’s come back and do it again! (Arm moved up and back)
Twinkle, twinkle, little stars! What a wonderful bunch you are! (Blow kisses)

For the writing/reading process, have your child trace or copy (advanced skill) daily his/her name on paper/dry eraser board/ mini blackboard (kindergarten handwriting page) starting at the top of each letter (you could draw an emoji 🙂) either in all uppercase letters or just first letter in capital/uppercase and the rest in lowercase. If your child is starting to write on paper, you can write your child’s name with a highlighter and your child can use a crayon to trace it.

I realize that you might have to survey other members of your family for the question of the day so that your child have enough tally marks to count or have your child put more than one tally mark.

Which word starts with the letter Z?
ZEBRA 🦓/ YARN 🧶/ ZERO / PUZZLE 🧩

Your child started with Zig Zag Zebra Letterland and listened to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQipsb-DzT4 (Zig Zag Zebra is very shy, saying “zzzz…” while zipping by. Zebras often seem to be shy. But, we’ll never really know why) After listening to the song, your child traced a capital Z and a lower case z, starting at the top (song – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJnZePnDo-U), do a straight horizontal line, do a diagonal line down, and a straight horizontal line.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDU_jJLOoeo

Now, let’s listen to the story from the Letterland Corner: Zig Zag Zebra and the Buzz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BDTyuLiEhA After listening to the story, help your child retell the story using lots of Z words.

A whole week activity:
For the phonetic part, have a big yogurt container with a lid filled with small objects or pictures that have the letter Z (zebra, zero, zip, zoo, zoom, crazy, dizzy, fizzy, lazy, puzzle). You might want to add a picture of yarn, so that your child can say Yarn does not start with Z! Here is a book of Z word pictures: https://twistynoodle.com/my-letter-z-minibook/ and https://www.first-school.ws/t.asp?t=http://www.first-school.ws/images/alpha/ap1/z.gif Also, you can add new objects/pictures starting with the letter Z every day and let your child explore the container all through the week.

Science

For Planting Seeds Science Project, you will need (1) Seeds (uncooked bean if you have), (2) ziplock bag, (3) 2 cotton balls, (4) water, (5) empty yogurt cup with a hole at the bottom to drain excess water, (6) potting soil, and (7) tape.
We will try to have seeds grow/germinate/sprout in 2 different ways:
1. Have your child put some potting soil in the yogurt cup, press a seed in the soil, put it in a sunny spot and water it every day.
2. Have your child wet the 2 cotton balls, put them around the seed, put all in a ziplock bag, close the bag and tape it on a sunny window.
Encourage your child to make a drawing in their nature journal, if your child has one. Observe with your child and make predictions. Which seed will germinate first?

On the tune of “Oh, my Darling Clementine”, we can sing: what’s the weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label.

Language Arts

Spring Literature:
Before reading a book, start a conversation with your child: where do seeds come from? Where do they go? (Help your child to come up with Fruit, vegetables, trees, flowers,…)  Let’s read!

  1. The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle (advanced) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZITtrzoK4c.
  2. Plants Can’t Sit Still by Rebecca E. Hirsch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFHSSq7cmy4
  3. Grow Flower Grow by Lisa Bruce https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eL90SIBIys
  4. Lola Plants a Garden by Anna McQuinn (beauty of sharing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Txxq-twKXJg

After viewing a book, help your child sequence the story: what happened first, next,… at the end. Brainstorm with your child what you learned about seeds and flowers (flowers have roots, petal, stem and leaves). Decide which seeds you and your child would like to plant in a garden.

For an advanced activity, have your child fill in a simple story map. Take a sheet of paper and divide it into 3 equal size parts. Write “Beginning”, “Middle”, and “End” and encourage your child to make a drawing about the beginning, the middle and the end of the story.

“Love Grows” Song with Movement
Love (cross your arms on your front) grows (move one hand through the circle made by fingers of the other hand),
One by one (show 1 finger of each hand in front of you),
And two by two (show 2 fingers of each hand),
And four by four (show 4 fingers of each hand).
Love grows round like a circle (draw a circle with 1 hand),
And comes back knocking on your front door!” (Bang your fist on the palm of the other hand). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MMAkzLDzUU

“Mary, Mary, Quite Contrairy” Nursery Rhyme
Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grows?
With silver bells and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row!

My Garden Movement Activity
“This is my garden. (Extend one hand forward. Palm up)
I’ll rake it with care. (Make raking motion on palm using three fingers of other hand)
I’ve got some small seeds. (Use thumb and finger to show small)
To plant right in there. (Plant motion)
The sun will shine. (Make circle with hands)
And the rain will fall. (Let fingers flutter down to lap)
My seeds will sprout. (Cup hands together; move upward slowly)
And grow really tall. (Stand on tiptoes and stand tall)

Math

Talk to your child about small and tall, how plants grow and have different sizes. Give your child a ruler, show your child how to read the numbers and invite your child to measure things. Play a game with your child on who can find the tallest thing in the house or the smallest thing.

Spring is in the air in March! The calendar is a daily activity to do with your child that develop number and pattern recognition. Here is the link to print a calendar to update daily with your child. The set has a weather component, if you like. https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/march-calendar-set/march-calendar-set-4

Daily counting of tally marks and show your child a number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has fewer? Which are the same? How many more (count with fingers)?

“Twinkle, twinkle, little stars” Song and Movement

Twinkle, twinkle little star. (Open and close both hands)
How I wonder what you are!
