Let’s sing together our song “Rise and Shine – Welcome to School Today” by Dr. Jean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAD2OoFuoY and our greeting song “Hello to all the children of the world”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8

My favorite Closing Song sung on “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” tune with movement:

Twinkle, twinkle little stars! Time is over and we say goodbye. (Open and close hands)
We had fun with all our friends. Let’s come back and do it again! (Arm moved up and back)
Twinkle, twinkle, little stars! What a wonderful bunch you are! (Blow kisses)

For the writing/reading process, have your child trace or copy (advanced skill) daily his/her name on paper/dry eraser board/ mini blackboard (kindergarten handwriting page) starting at the top of each letter (you could draw an emoji 🙂) either in all uppercase letters or just first letter in capital/uppercase and the rest in lowercase. If your child is starting to write on paper, you can write your child’s name with a highlighter and your child can use a crayon to trace it.

I realize that you might have to survey other members of your family for the question of the day so that your child have enough tally marks to count or have your child put more than one tally mark.

Which type of material would you use to build a house?
HAY / STICKS OR WOOD / BRICKS

Making Letter R Shape:

  1. 1 big line, 1 little curve, and 1 little line for capital R/1 little line and 1 little curve for Lowercase r. Your child use a finger to trace the letter starting at the top, going down, jump back up, go around, and a diagonal down. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBwJnjbRbro) In order to start learning letters, your child will need a set of big curves, little curves, big lines and little lines in wood. You can purchase them at https://www.lwtears.com or make them your self. Here is a picture: http://cdn.lwtears.com/images/uploads/1_787_large.png)
  2. Wet-Dry-Try on small chalkboard (Handwriting Without Tears) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6p4LUEGbwM
  3. Play dough with small chalkboard (recipe: https://www.thebestideasforkids.com/playdough-recipe/) or you can purchase the Roll-A-Dough Set from Handwriting without Tears https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spjVLDXDixI

For Making Number 2 Shape: 1 big curve and 1 little line. For writing number 2: start at the top, go down and around on a diagonal and straight across https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op1879vlnq8 Encourage your child to trace with pointer finger.

If you have My First School Book from Handwriting Without Tears methodology https://www.lwtears.com/hwt. Have your child complete pages 50 and 51 and pages 78-79.

A whole week activity:
For the phonetic part, have a big yogurt container with a lid filled with small objects or pictures that start with the letter R (rabbit, race, radio, rain, rascal, rat, read, ready, really, red, ride, right, ring, road, robber, robot, rock, roll, roof, rope, roses, round, rubber, rule, run, ruler.) You might want to add a picture of a bee, so that your child can say bee does not start with R! Here is a book of R word pictures: https://www.first-school.ws/t.asp?t=http://www.first-school.ws/images/alpha/ap1/r1.gif Also, you can add new objects/pictures starting with the letter R every day and let your child explore the container all through the week.

Science

For the Physics Experiment, you need three types of building material: hay, sticks and blocks (duplos). Encourage your child to explore the material and build with them. Once your child has built three structures, discuss which one is the strongest. Ask you child what will happen if a heavy object falls on the structures. Then, use a heavy small rock and allow your child to drop it on the structures. What happens and which structure is still standing? (I asked 4th grade students to build a strong bridge with popsicle sticks and glue that could support a heavy object.)

On the tune of “Oh, my Darling Clementine”, we can sing: what’s the weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label.

Language Arts

Three Little Pigs Literature:
1. The Three Little Pigs by Dara Goldman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN-73zQtNC0.
2. The Three Little Pigs retold by Nicola Baxter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpEBv1GFte4.
3. The Three Little Pigs (Educational TV) (advanced) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twE_dGOehCg
4. The True Story of the Three Little Story by A. Wolf retold by Jon Scieszka (advanced) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB07RfntTvw

Either in the classroom environment or in your home with members of your family, the story of The Three Little Pigs is excellent to act out (readers’ theater).

After viewing a book, help your child sequence the story of the three little pigs: what happened first, next,… at the end. Brainstorm with your child how you and your child could change the ending of the story like the three little pigs built their houses with the nice wolf.

Little Piggy Nursery Rhyme and Finger Movement
This little piggy went to the market.
This little piggy stayed home.
This little piggy had roast beef (or something to eat).
This little piggy had none.
And this little piggy said, “wee, wee” all the way home.

5 Little Pig Fingerplay (“5 Little Ducks” tune”)
5 little pigs that I once knew,
Fat ones, skinny ones and fair ones too.
But the one little pig with a funny little tail.
It led the others with an
Oink, oink, oink (3x).
It led the others with an
Oink, oink, oink, oink.
4 little pigs that I once knew……

”Straw, Sticks and Bricks” Song (“Thre Blind Mice” tune)
Straw, Sticks and Bricks.
Straw, Sticks and Bricks.
The pigs built their houses out of
Straw, Sticks and Bricks.

The wolf came by,
And blew the straw house down,
The sticks were no better, but the bricks stayed strong!
The pigs danced around, the pigs danced around!

Math

Let’s review shapes! For the Shapes Math Activity, you need (1) pink construction paper, (2) scissors, (3) glue, (4) googly eyes, and (5) black marker. Cut various shapes out of pink construction paper:
1. Big square, rectangle, triangle, circle, oval, pentagon, Star, …for pig’s head.
2. Medium size ovals for pig’s nose.
3. Small hearts for pig’s ears.
4. Glue pig’s faces together using different big shapes with nose, eyes and ears.
5. Draw 2 lines like tally marks on pig’s oval nose for pig’s nostrils.

Discuss with your child the shapes, the number of sides and corners (vertices).

Here is a Shape Memory Game https://twistynoodle.com/printable-shapes-memory-match-coloring-page/ Cut shapes cards, put them face down and try to turn over 2 similar shapes.

January just started. The calendar is a daily activity to do with your child that develop number and pattern recognition. Here is the link to print a calendar to update daily with your child. The set has a weather component, if you like.
https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/january-calendar-set/january-calendar-set-2 Daily counting of tally marks and show your child a number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has fewer? Which are the same? How many more (count with fingers)?

Art

For the Three Little Pigs Puppets Art Project, you need (1) shape pig faces you made as a math activity, (2) paper bag, (3) glue.
