Dolphins! Dolphins ahead! On our way back to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center main building (Edgewater, Maryland), we all saw bottlenose dolphins and asked the captain to stop the boat. What a treat! These mammals are so acrobatic. An entire pod was swimming happily in the Chesapeake Bay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjMn_dVCJyA
Science
This week, we learned about life in the Chesapeake Bay. We studied about birds (seagull, pelican), crustaceans (crab, horseshoe crab, hermit crab), fish (flounder, blue fish, Ray, Clownfish) and dolphins.
Let’s review with your child which one lays egg.
On a piece of paper or your child’s journal, divide a page into 2 columns: (1) lays eggs and (2) has babies. Help your child to decide which one goes in which column. All birds, crabs and fish lay eggs and only dolphins have babies!
Language Arts
Danny & Daisy. A Tale of a Dolphin Duo by Suzanne Tate is the perfect story to end the week about the Chesapeake Bay study. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkv9zwp6F3c
After viewing the book, help your child to tell you about his/her favorite part and explain why.
There is also an underlying theme in her book about best friends. As your child what it means. Have a friend or best friend.

Build an obstacle course for your little dolphin and time him/her going through the obstacle course. Dolphins are well-known to be fast swimmers.
Your child can squeak/squeal like a dolphin. He/she will need to inflate a balloon, and to stretch its neck to let the air out and make a squeaking sound just like a dolphin.
