The Amazon River basin is the largest basin in the world and it snakes through the Amazon Rainforest. Its biodiversity is extensive and we will concentrate on animals living in this tropical rainforest. Here is a video from National Geographic Kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbVAhNVz4U8
Science
The weather in the Tropical rainforest is mainly rainy with hot temperatures. Let’s make a rainy cloud in a jar. For this experiment, you need (1) a jar, (2) shaving cream, (3) blue food coloring, (4) water.
Have your child fill the jar with water, spray shaving cream on top and drop some food coloring above the cream. The weight of food coloring will move down like the rain from a cloud. Here is the explanation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4GePPTUAjI
Language Arts
In the tropical rainforest, there are many different kinds of monkeys. Grumpy Monkey by Suzanne Lang tells the story of a very grumpy monkey with lots of friends. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wylzbbSL668
after viewing the book, help your child tell you which animal did monkey encounter in the story. Then, you can also discuss with your child the meaning of “being grumpy” and how does your child feel when she/he is grumpy.
Here is a funny book to sing: Five Little Monkey by Eileen Christelow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DyUk5OFUJ0 Once you view the book, you can sing the song with your child.
“Five Little Monkeys” Fingerplay (5 fingers are the monkeys and other hand is the alligator)
Five little monkeys swinging from a tree.
Teasing Mr. Alligator, “You can’t catch me, you can’t catch me!“
Along comes Mr. Alligator as quiet as can be,
And snaps that monkey right out of the tree!
Four little monkeys…, three little monkeys…, two little monkeys…
One little monkey swinging from a tree,
Teasing Mr. Alligator, “You can’t catch me, you can’t cat h me!”
Along comes Mr. Alligator as quiet as can be,
And snaps that monkey right out of the tree!
“The Itsy Bitsy Monkey” Song (Tune of “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”)
The Itsy Bitsy monkey climbs up the coconut tree.
Down comes a coconut and hit him on the knee! Ouch!
Out comes a tiger, shaking its mighty body,
And the Itsy Bitsy monkey climbs up the tree again!
