When the dinosaurs were alive, the world was hot and dry around the equator and warm and humid in other parts. What could you see in their environment? …… Volcanoes! And you can still see lots of volcanoes on earth today.

Let’s learn about volcanoes in Hawaii. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhZTZShA1dc

Science

You can build an erupting volcano with your child. For this science project, you need (1) empty yogurt cup, (2) vinegar, (3) baking soda, (4) food coloring, (5) tray, (6) newspaper, (7) liquid glue, (8) water, (9) bowl, (10) scissors and (11) paint.

Build a small circle with newspaper and place the yogurt cup in the middle. Help your child cut strips of newspaper. Mix liquid glue with water To make it runny in the bowl. Dip strips in the mixture and place them from the rim of the yogurt cup down to the tray. Continue to layer the walls of your volcanoes. Once you are happy with your volcano, let it dry for a day. Have your child paint the walls of the volcanoes in red and yellow.

Once your volcano is dry, you are ready for the eruption. Put 2 tbs of baking soda in the yogurt cup and then pour 1/2 cup of vinegar on the baking soda. You can add more of vinegar and baking soda to lengthen the fun. What happened?

If your child has a nature journal, ask your child to make a drawing that you can date and label.
