Yassou! Let’s sing together our song “Rise and Shine – Welcome to School Today” by Dr. Jean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAD2OoFuoY and our greeting song “Hello to all the children of the world”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8

I realize that you might have to survey other members of your family for the question of the day so that your child have enough tally marks to count or have your child put more than one tally mark.

We are ready to start learning letters! The Handwriting Without Tears methodology encourage children to start writing letters at the top with a song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJnZePnDo-U You will often see a smiley face 🙂 where your child has to start writing a letter. I would recommend practicing with the number 1 on page 77 and 78 of My First School Book.

For the writing/reading process, have your child trace or copy (advanced skill) daily his/her name on paper/dry eraser board/ mini blackboard (kindergarten handwriting page) starting at the top of each letter, either in all uppercase letters or just first letter in uppercase and the rest in lowercase.

If you have My First School Book from Handwriting Without Tears methodology, we will use it. https://www.lwtears.com/hwt.

In order to start learning letters, your child will need a set of big curves, little curves, big lines and little lines in wood. You can purchase them at https://www.lwtears.com or make them your self. Here is a picture: http://cdn.lwtears.com/images/uploads/1_787_large.png

In case you have started checking your child’s Readiness for the program, you might want to finish by working together and filling in pages 92-93 in My First School Book. This evaluation will show your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Science

On the tune of “Clementine”, we can sing: what’s the weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label. Some activities will be repetitive to create a routine that brings comfort to your child.

With temperatures getting cooler, I recommend you have a big thermometer. You can check the temperature every day with your child.

Language Arts

Just Me And My Cousin by Gina and Mercer Mayer read by a grandpa with a hidden little mouse on each page. Check it out! The Little Critter Book series is a delightful collection for children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro-yHZe4YL8

After viewing the book, help your child to remember what happened in the story. Brainstorm how many cousins your child has and what is your child’s favorite activities with cousins/friends. As a result, your child might want to draw a picture for a cousin/friend that your child could give or you could mail.

“I Have Ten Little Fingers” Fingerplay

have ten little fingers and they all belong to me.
I can make them do things. Would you like to see?
I can shut them up tight. I can open them up wide.
I can clap them together. I can make them hide.
I can make them jump high. I can make them jump low.
I can fold them together & hold them just so! https://kcls.org/content/i-have-ten-little-fingers/

“Love Grows” Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN3RGUt87d0) I teach the sign language too.

”Five Little Ducks” Song and Fingerplay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG58OOKoLOk

Five little ducks that I once knew.
Fast ones, skinny ones, fair ones too.
But the one little duck with the feather on his back.
It led the others with his quack, quack, quack.
Quack, quack, quack-quack, quack, quack
It led the others with his quack, quack, quack.
Down to the river they would go.
Wibble wobble, wibble wobble to and fro.
But the one little duck with the feather on his back
It led the others with a quack, quack, quack.
Quack, quack, quack-quack, quack, quack
It led the others with his quack, quack, quack,….

Math

Daily counting of tally marks and the counters you put in a container is an excellent practice for your child’s mathematical skills. Once tallied or counted, show your child the appropriate number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day and you can also change the counters. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has fewer? Which are the same?

The calendar is a daily activity to do with your child that develop number and pattern recognition. Here is the link to print a calendar to update daily with your child. The set has a weather component, if you like. https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/september-calendar-setbr4-pages/september-calendar-set-3

Let’s also sing the Days of the Week Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKqAblcwFOA You might want to point to the words on the calendar to associate a word to its group of letters.

Art

For a Watercolor Painting Art Project, you need (1) paper, (2) brush, and (3) watercolor.

Your child is ready to create a masterpiece. You could put the paper on a vertical surface in order to let the watercolor drip down the paper like a waterfall. What fun!

For this Engineering Project, you need, (1) recyclables (toilet paper rolls, yogurt cups, cardboard, magazines,…), (2) scissors, (3) tape, (4) glue, (5) crayons/markers. Let your child tell you what he/she will build. You might need to help with scissors and tape. At the end, ask your child what he/she engineered!
