Let’s sing together our song “Rise and Shine – Welcome to School Today” by Dr. Jean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAD2OoFuoY and our greeting song “Hello to all the children of the world”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8

I realize that you might have to survey other members of your family for the question of the day so that your child have enough tally marks to count or have your child put more than one tally mark.

What is your favorite pet?
DOG 🐕 CAT 🐈 ELEPHANT 🐘 HAMSTER 🐹

For the writing/reading process, have your child trace or copy (advanced skill) daily his/her name on paper/dry eraser board/ mini blackboard (kindergarten handwriting page) starting at the top of each letter (you could draw 🙂) either in all uppercase letters or just first letter in uppercase and the rest in lowercase.

Yesterday, you learned about Eddy Elephant from Letterland and listen to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtfMzp8tZ3I and you traced the capital E and lowercase e. Let’s listen to his story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oejx-n-3N7c After listening to the story, help your child to retell the story using lots of E words.

A whole week activity:
For the phonetic part, have a big yogurt container with a lid filled with small objects or pictures that start with the letter E (Elephant, egg, enveloppe, exit, elbow). You might want to add a picture of a puppy, so that your child can say that puppy does not start with E! Here is a book of E word pictures https://twistynoodle.com/my-e-e-book-3-minibook/ Also, you can add new objects/pictures starting with the letter E every day and let your child explore the container all through the week.

Science

When you visit any doctor, the nurse checks first your weight on a scale. Next, the nurse checks your height. In the classroom, I would measure children at the beginning and the end of the school year on a growth chart wall ruler. It was a fun way to show children how much they grew! You can do the same with your child and any member of your family. I learned that children love seeing their growth, and compare themselves to others. As an extension, your child can measure the height of teddy bears, pets, books,…

On the tune of “Clementine”, we can sing: what’s the weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label. Some activities will be repetitive to create a routine that brings comfort to your child.

Language Arts

Ask your child: What do you do if your pet is sick? Do you go to a doctor? Your child might already know that the doctor for animals is called a vet or veterinarian. Here is Paula the Vet by Julia Donaldson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPjtnWMaYh4

After viewing the book, help your child to sequence the story: what happened first, next, and at the end. As an supplemental activity, you and your child could pretend going to the vet. Your child can be the vet and you and/or another member of your family can be the owner of a pet (real, stuffed animals, pet rocks, …) going to a consultation to the vet. Enjoy!

“I am a Vet” Song (Tune of “Clementine”)

I’m a vet, I’m a vet,
I’m a veterinarian.
I take care of animals,
And I treat them one by one.

I give shots, I set legs,
And sometimes I operate.
I take care of animals,
‘Cause I think they are great.

Bring your dogs, bring you cats,
Bring your hamsters one by one.
I take care of animals,
I’m a vet. Yes, I am a vet!

“What is my Job?” Song (Tune of “Are you sleeping?”)

What is my job?
What is my job?
Can you guess?
Can you guess?
I keep your pets healthy.
I keep your pets healthy.
Who am I?
Who am I? (Vet)

Other verses: I help when you get lost, I keep people healthy, I help with toothaches,….

Helper Fingerplay

First is Dr. Brell who keeps us well.
Second is Nurse Hick, who cares for the sick.
Third is Dr. Keith, who cares for our teeth.
Fourth is Postman Dale, who delivers the mail.
Fifth is one here — hey, that’s me!
We all work together for our community!

Math

Let’s play a game of bingo with shapes by printing https://preschoolmom.com/wp-content/uploads/PMom/Bingo/ShapeBingoPack.pdf (you have lots of colored construction paper shapes from yesterday’s activity)

The calendar is a daily activity to do with your child that develop number and pattern recognition. Here is the link to print a calendar to update daily with your child. The set has a weather component, if you like. https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/october-calendar-setbr4-pages/october-calendar-set-3

Daily counting of tally marks and show your child a number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has fewer? Which are the same? How many more (count with fingers)?

Art

For E for Elephant Art Project, you need (1) Print Elephant template http://missmarensmonkeys.blogspot.com/2012/10/e-templateelephant.html, (2) scissors, (3) glue, (4) white and colored construction paper, and (5) black marker.

Directions:

  1. Cut pieces on the printed template and used as stencils on colored construction paper.
  2. Glue all pieces together on white construction paper to shape E for Elephant.
  3. Use black marker as needed.

Every week, you will have the letter of the week art project that you could keep in a binder and label it The Alphabet Binder of Letterland.

For the Mystery Letter Art Project, you need (1) watercolor with brush, and (2) paint a thick letter E in milk in advance on white construction paper. Once dried, have your child paint with watercolor to uncover letter E.
