Let’s sing together our song “Rise and Shine – Welcome to School Today” by Dr. Jean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyAD2OoFuoY and our greeting song “Hello to all the children of the world”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8
I realize that you might have to survey other members of your family for the question of the day so that your child have enough tally marks to count or have your child put more than one tally mark.
How many scarecrows have you seen so far?
🎃 / 🎃🎃🎃 /🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃 /🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
For the writing/reading process, have your child trace or copy (advanced skill) daily his/her name on paper/dry eraser board/ mini blackboard (kindergarten handwriting page) starting at the top of each letter (you could draw 🙂) either in all uppercase letters or just first letter in uppercase and the rest in lowercase.
Yesterday, your child started with Talking Tess from Letterland and listened to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcNyACBVitU Your child traced the capital T and lowercase t. Let’s listen to his story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00hvE5jTLj8 After listening to the story, help your child to retell the story using lots of T words.
A whole week activity:
For the phonetic part, have a big yogurt container with a lid filled with small objects or pictures that start with the letter T (table, teddy, telephone, ten, top, tractor.) You might want to add a picture of a hippo, so that your child can say that hippo does not start with T! Here is a book of T word pictures: https://twistynoodle.com/it-begins-with-t-minibook/ Also, you can add new objects/pictures starting with the letter T every day and let your child explore the container all through the week.
Science
Your child discovered about the moon coming out at night. Some animals also wake up at night. Wake Up, Night shows your child many nocturnal animals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhTMa2YkB0Q Brainstorm with your child the nocturnal animals in your neighborhood.
On the tune of “Oh, my Darling Clementine”, we can sing: what’s the weather, what’s the weather, what’s the weather like today? Is it cloudy, is it rainy, is it sunny, is it cold? (You can also change the weather words).
Let your child check the weather and tell you about it. You might want to ask your child to do a weather drawing that you can label. Some activities will be repetitive to create a routine that brings comfort to your child.
Language Arts
Here are scarecrow stories:
- The Little Old Lady Who Was not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ccGGL_UE68
- The Little Scarecrow Boy by Margaret Wise Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNAW8A7eqHE (advanced)
After viewing a story, help your child sequence the story: what happened first, next and at the end (building memory.) Brainstorm with your child (1) what you need to build a scarecrow and (2) what faces you and your child can make that are scary (try many). Your child can draw faces too!
“5 Little Scarecrows” Fingerplay
Five little scarecrows standing in a row.
The first one said, “Look, here come the crows!”
The second one said, “I am very small.”
The third one said, “But, I am very tall.”
The fourth one said, “I can bend my head.”
The fifth one said, “I can wave my arms, instead.”
Five little scarecrows standing in a row,
Count them as they move when the wind blows.
“5 Black and Shiny Crows” Song (“Green and speckled frog” tune)
5 black and shiny crows sitI give on a scarecrow’s nose,
Eating the most delicious corn, “YUM, YUM”
The scarecrow shouted, “BOO!” and 1 crow away flew.
Now there are 4 black shiny crows, “CAW! CAW!“
“Scarecrow, scarecrow dressed in red” Song and Movement
Scarecrow, scarecrow dressed in red.
Scarecrow, scarecrow touch your head.
Scarecrow, scarecrow dancing in the breeze.
Scarecrow, scarecrow touch your knees.
Scarecrow, scarecrow dressed in tattered clothes.
Scarecrow, scarecrow touch your nose.
Scarecrow, scarecrow hear the wind roar.
Scarecrow, scarecrow drop to the floor!
Math
For this math sorting activity, you need buttons and a muffin/cupcake pan. Your child can sort buttons in the pan by colors, shapes, and sizes, and count the buttons in each cup. Label with the number.
The calendar is a daily activity to do with your child that develop number and pattern recognition. Here is the link to print a calendar to update daily with your child. The set has a weather component, if you like. https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/october-calendar-setbr4-pages/october-calendar-set-3
Daily counting of tally marks and show your child a number card or write the number down to show your child. The numbers of the tallies will be different every day. Extend the concept by comparing numbers: which has more? Which has fewer? Which are the same? How many more (count with fingers)?
