Every day, we take a walk to Rock Creek at the end of our street. We have observed the beauty of nature and have discovered plants, birds and water life. We even saw a trout! Before getting to the creek, we found an area with still water and…. lots of tadpoles. Let’s learn about them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmlaclb3K2o

Here is an activity to review the Frog’s life cycle https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/science-activity-frogs-life-cycle/it-s-a-frog-s-life

Science

Frogs are part of the amphibian family, just like toads, salamanders and newts. They have many characteristics, but the main one is that they can breath through their skins! This video will explain some characteristics of amphibians. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI8GPsf6TAc After viewing the video, help your child to review characteristics of amphibians:

  1. Are carnivorous
  2. Have lungs like us but also breath through their skins ( have your child show where his/her lungs are)
  3. Lay eggs
  4. Are vertebrates or have a backbone like us (Have your child touch his/her backbone)
  5. wet skin (have you child imagine being in the pool)

If your child has a nature journal, take a walk and write if you see tadpoles with your child’s drawing that you can label and date.

Critters at the a Pond Science Page also helps to review what else you can see visiting a pond! https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/science-worksheet-pond-animals/critters-at-the-pond

You can also view Jump, Frog, Jump! Book by Robert Kaplan that tells you about other creatures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scwwxjzayXM

Language Arts

In class, we usually read 5 Green and Speckled Frogs by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt-8-CWgR7s and use our hands and our forearm while we sing the song.

Good Morning, Pond by Alyssa Satin Capucilli is an excellent introduction to pond life too.

There are other fun songs too:
“I’m A Little Froggy” Song (Tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”)

I’m a little froggy slick and green.

I once was a tadpole, as you have seen.

Then I grew some strong legs swimming about.

And now I am a frog.

Hurray, let’s shout!

“Ribbit!”

Another one is “Frog on a Log” Fingerplay

A little frog sat on a log, (Make a frog mouth with one hand)
As quiet as can be.
He didn’t move. He didn’t croak.
He didn’t notice me.
By and by, a little fly (Wiggle index finger of other hand)
Came buzzing to and fro. (Move index or fly toward the frog’s mouth)
A tongue shot out; I looked again. (close hand around index finger)
Now where did that fly go? (Hide hands behind back)
