Science

Why do ducks float? Let’s have an experiment! To explain buoyancy, you need (1) a bowl of water, (2) a plastic bag, (3) a rubber band.

Help your child put one hand in a plastic bag attached with a rubber band and have your child put his/her hand in the bowl of water. What happens? Is the child’s hand getting wet? It is protected by the plastic bag.

It works the same way for ducks. Their bodies are covered with feathers which trap air between feathers and their skins. It creates a balloon-like effect or buoyancy that helps the ducks float.

It is also interesting to review facts about animals and birds on the farm. If your child has a journal, you could divide a page into 2 columns: one for animals (that have babies) and one for birds (that lay eggs). Ask your child to tell you all the farm animals/birds and decide in which columns they belong and why.

Here is a wonderful story about a duck family: Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy73DR493Oo

Before viewing the story, ask your child what the story is about. After viewing, help your child sequence the story (what happened first, next and at the end of the book) and print the Make Way for Ducklings Booklet https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/emmake-way-for-ducklingsem-booklet/just-ducky-4

“Five Little Ducks“ Fingerplay

Five little ducks went out to play,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother duck said,
“Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
Four little ducks came waddling back.

Four little ducks….
Three little ducks….

Two little ducks……

One little ducks
No little ducks came waddling back
From over the hills and far away,
Father duck said,
“Quack, quack, quack, quack,”
All the little ducks came waddling back.

“Three Little Ducks That I Once Knew” Song

Three little ducks that I once knew.
A fat one, a skinny one, a yellow one, too.
But the one little duck with a feather on his back
He ruled the others with his quack, quack, quack!

Down to the meadow they would go.
Wibble-wobble, wibble-wobble to and fro.
But the one little duck with the feathers on his back.
He ruled the others with a quack, quack, quack.
He ruled the others with a quack, quack, quack.

“Little Duck“ Fingerplay

I am a little duck that goes quack, quack, quack.
(Make hand be duck’s mouth and it quacks)
And I’ve got lots of feathers on my back, back, back.
(Wave hands near body to make feathers)
And when I go down to the lake, I wiggle and I wobble and I shake, shake, shake.
(Wobble and shake like a duck)
And when I go to sleep at night,
I close my eyes very tight.
But in the morning when I wake,
I wiggle and I wobble and I shake, shake, shake.

“I’m a Duck, I’m a Duck“ Song (tune of “Frere Jacques”)

I’m a duck, I’m a duck,
Watch me waddle, watch me waddle.
Hear me when I talk,
Hear me when I talk.
Quack, quack, quack; quack, quack, quack.

Math

Help your child continue the April Calendar Pattern (Info-Reptiles Week 3).

You can review shapes with this activity: Duck with Shapes Pattern https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/duck-patternsbr4-pages/ducks-with-shapes Help your child cut ducks, color the shapes and make a booklet.

For this math activity, you need yellow pom-poms or ducks and a blue piece of construction paper or pond. Recite the rhyme shown below and encourage your child to put corresponding sets of ducks on his/her pond. Then count with your child the total number of ducks in the pond. Repeat the activity as many times as you want, changing the numbers as desired. Here is the rhyme:

There were [five] little ducks on the pond one day.
[Three] more ducks came to splash and play.
How many ducks were on that pond?
What number does [five] and [three] make?

Art

For the craft activity, you need (1) pattern below
Duck Craft Pattern https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/make-a-duck-craft/05_aprpri_drops, (2) paper bag, (3) yellow and orange construction paper, (4) googley eyes, (5) glue, and (6) scissors.

Have your child cut the pattern pieces. Trace the feet, bill and both your child’s hands on orange construction paper and the body on yellow construction paper. Help your child to cut all the pieces. Then glue all pieces together on the paper bag, as well as the eyes. You made a puppet!

As a second project, you can replace the paper bag with half of a big paper plate.
