Honey, honey, honey! On our walk to Rock Creek, we see four boxes that actually are beehives! Let’s learn about bees from the National Geographic Kids Readers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWrltqaq3-Y
Science
Review with your child that a bee is an insect and has body parts: Head, thorax, abdomen, six legs, 2 antennae and a set of wings. You can find a song in Insects Week – General.
Bee workers deposit the nectar into a honeycomb. Here is a copy of what a honeycomb looks like and you can help your child to color it. http://www.supercoloring.com/coloring-pages/hexagon-honeycomb-tessellation and you can glue some paper bees on it with Make a Bee Coloring Page https://twistynoodle.com/make-a-bee-coloring-page/
If your child has a nature journal, help him/her to glue the project above in it.
Language Arts
We love bees and their stories. The Happy Bee by Ian Beck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnNf2j1Gl_4 is about what makes a bee happy. The second books is about bravery and care: Buzz Bumble to the Rescue by Lynn E. Hazen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1airmXm8cw
After each reading, help your child to sequence the story: what happens first, next and at the end. Also, ask your child what makes him/her happy and, in the second story, how does your child shows love or care for his/her family.
Here is the Cut and Paste the Letters HAPPY https://twistynoodle.com/cut-and-paste-the-letters-h-a-p-p-y-coloring-page/ and Cut and Paste the Letters LOVE https://twistynoodle.com/cut-and-paste-the-letters-l-o-v-e-coloring-page/
Five Little Purple Flowers Fingerplay (Tune of “Five Little Speckled Frogs”)
Five Little Purple Flowers standing in the sun for hours,
Waiting for all the bees to come. Buzz, buzz!
One wilted to the ground. No water could be found.
Now, there are four little purple flowers.
Four little purple flowers, …..
Three little purple flowers,….
Two little purple flowers,…..
One little purple flower,………. Now, there are no more purple flowers!
Five Little Bees Fingerplay
One little bee flew and flew.
He met a friend and that made two.
Two little bees, busy as could be,
Along came another and that made three.
Three little bees wanted one more,
Found one soon and that made four.
Four little bees, going to the hive,
Spied their little brother, and that made five.
Five little bees working every hour.
Buzz away, bees, and find another flower.
Worker Bee Song (Tune of “She’ll be coming round the mountain”)
They’ll be flying round the flowers in the yard. Buzz, buzz!
They’ll be flying round the flowers in the yard. Buzz, buzz!
They’ll be flying round the flowers. They’ll be flying round the flowers.
They’ll be flying round the flowers in the yard. Buzz, buzz!
They’ll be slurping down the nectar when they come. Gulp, gulp! …….
They’ll be swooping up the pollen with their legs. Fun, fun! …….
They’ll be feeding all the babies in the hives. Eat, eat! ………
They’ll be cooling down the hive with their wings. Flap, flap! ……..
They’ll be making lots of honey for us to eat. Yum, yum! …….
