Which is the tallest mammal in the Savanna that has four long legs, a long tongue, a long neck and a unique spot pattern? Let’s find out with the National Geographic Kids video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwk2Z4E3Xpw

Science

There are four different species of giraffes: the Masai Giraffe, the Rothschild Giraffe, the Somali Giraffe, and the Nigerian Giraffe.  Each Giraffe has its own unique spot pattern. What color is the giraffe skin? For today’s science project, we will explore what a capillary action is to make our own giraffe skins!

For this science experiment, you need (1) watercolor, (2) brush, (3) water, and (4) paper towel. Have your child dip the paintbrush in Water/paint (Orange and yellow for a giraffe’s skin or other colors) and dot it on the paper towel.  Immediately you will see the colored water start to spread out! The water is really moving through the paper towel.

Capillary action is a liquid flowing in narrow spaces.  In this experiment, colored water will be flowing between ridges on a paper towel, like water travelIng up tall tree trunks through narrow xylem. Water Molecules tend to stick to each other because each water molecule has slight positive and negative sides which attract other water molecules with oppositely charged sides.

Giraffe Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vZjsLK5vwNU Is a Colorful story of compassion. After viewing the story, help your child to tell you the details. Have some yellow square legos on hand and tell your child he/she is going to build a long neck for Gerald. You child can stack a cube for every detail in the story. See how long Gerald’s neck can be!

The story has also an underlying moral about accepting one’s differences and the differences of others. Like the story of What if the Zebras Lost their Stripes, this book emphasizes compassion and empathy. Discuss with your child how you and him/her are different and similar, and how we all live together with our differences and similarities.

Rhyming about Gerald
Gerald thought he could not dance,

Until he tried and gave it a chance!

It found the music that made it hop,

And when it found it, it could not stop!

Just like Gerald we’re all special in our own way.

Let’s celebrate our friends and what makes them great!

We Are Going to the Savanna Song (Tune of “We are going on a Bear Hunt”)

We are going to the savanna,

To see what we can see!

We have our cameras and binoculars, too!

Uh-ho! There is a tall giraffe, a tall giraffe!

We can’t go near it!

We don’t want to scare it!

a look through your binoculars!
Take a picture too!

Change a tall giraffe with a fierce lion, a fast zebra, a lazy rhino, a hungry hippo, …

5 Little Giraffes Jumping on a Bed Song (Tune of “5 Little Monkeys Jumping on a bed”)

5 little giraffes jumping on a bed.

1 fell off and bumped her head.

Mama called the doctor and the doctor said, “No more giraffes jumping on the bed.”

4 little giraffes jumping on the bed…

Math

June is a new month and your child needs a new calendar. Print this calendar set https://www.themailbox.com/magazines/june-calendar-setbr4-pages/june-calendar-set and have your child choose a pattern to follow for the new month.

For this activity, your child need a measuring tape. Ask your child to find 10 objects like toys to measure. If you do not have a measuring tape, stack square blocks to measure objects. A dinosaur can be 5 blocks high, for instance. After measuring, ask your child to sort the objects from smaller to taller or vice-versa.
